City of Huanuco

At 400 km. from Lima along the carreterra central, Huanuco is an attractive city at 1800 meters above sea level. It was one of the first Spanish foundations in Peru. Its history, however, began with the relocation of an Inca city whose archaeological remains are now known as Huanuco Viejo (Old Huanuco).

Because of the fusion of the two roots -Inca and Spanish- and its strong influence of Amazonian culture, Huanuco has a rich and diverse traditional culture which is evident in its music, language, food and architecture.

Surroundings

In its grand haciendas it is still possible to appreciate the refined culture and the quality of life which the landowners from Huanuco enjoyed until the last century. These tell a tale of prosperous times, war, civil struggle and slavery; of dreams and disillusionment.

This town with deep roots and rich diversity has also played an important role in the history of the Republic. It has been the cradle of presidents and military heroes such as the illustrious Prado family. Also it has nurtured poets and musicians of the stature of Amarilis and Daniel Alomia Robles.

Another area of interest -and the least publicised feature of Huanuco- is its huge natural biodiversity. The large number of endemic and rare species in the area is one of the least studied in Peru.

During the last decades of the twentieth Century Huanuco suffered the violence of terrorism and drug dealing. Over the past twenty years it has become economically isolated. A focussed effort is required to develop this area and we are committed to this objective.
