The cloud forest of Carpish is located just 50 Km. from Huanuco, it has a great diversity of species of flora and fauna in different levels of conservation - many of these are very rare - some unfortunately in danger of extinction. This forest is well known as an habitat of a large range of birds -like the Golden-backed Mountain Tanager Buthraupis aureodorsalis- and a great variety of orchids.
Near to Carpish is another fascinating area: Unchog. It is a very small expanse of woodland at 3,500metres above sea level, which apart from locals, is known only by birdwatchers because this area is habitat to the rare Pardusco Nephelornis oneilli.
Currently there is a low degree of protection for Carpish, but the extent of this law is not sufficient to be effective and it does not promote sustainable management in the area. Carpish and Unchog require protection on a national level as a first step for their conservation, otherwise they are in great danger from agricultural deforestation and timber extraction.
